This is manual and semi-skilled work in maintaining the city's storm sewers, streets, water and wastewater systems.

Maintenance Construction Workers are responsible for performing a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks in the inspection, maintenance and installation of the city's storm sewer system, sanitary sewage system, water distribution system or streets. Assignments are received in written or verbal form, and may be accompanied by rough sketches or blueprints.

Work is normally performed under close supervision of a Maintenance Construction Foreman and is checked in progress and upon completion to assure compliance with accepted standards of construction and maintenance for public improvements; and in compliance with City laws and ordinances.

Major Duties Essential Job Functions

Lays grade pipe in the construction of sanitary and storm sewers by use of string line and carpenter’s level or optical level and rod.
Digs trenches; lays and joins pipe.
Mixes mortar and carries mortar and brick for construction of catch basins, curbs and bridges.
Mixes, pours and finishes concrete.
Ensures job sites are coned off for safety of workers and the general public; checks for gases present prior to workers entering confined spaces; performs other checks to ensure job sites are safe.
Repairs broken sewer lines, water lines and laterals.
Lays brick for construction and repair of storm sewer manholes.
Spreads asphalt with hand tools to pave parking lots and streets.
Grades ditches with hand tools for laying pipe.
Uses power saw and other tools to cut down trees and bushes for the maintenance and clearance of right of ways and easements.
Operates small tractors and equipment in the construction and maintenance of storm system and streets.
Operates various equipment used in repair and maintenance of sewer and water systems.
May operate or assist with TV surveillance equipment to locate internal blockage and places in need of repair in sewer system.
Taps water mains under pressure for the installation of new services.
Repairs lead joints, sets meter boxes, mixes concrete and shuts off service lines.
Bricks in meter pits, raises and lowers valve stands, manholes, and meter and meter boxes.
Erects barricades and places lanterns around trenches and other work being done on traffic ways.
Erects concrete protectors around meter boxes.
Runs boring machine.
Cuts and threads pipes, locates and operates valves in making repairs on broken water mains, valves and fire hydrants.
Installs, removes, inspects and maintains water meters.
Locates water leaks in pipes, cast iron connections and fire hydrants with aid of aqua phones; assists in repairing leaks.
Traces underground service lines with the aid of pipe locators and blueprints.
Installs or rebuilds fire hydrants.
Disinfects water mains to maintain chemical balance in water system.
Shovels and levels asphalt paving materials for repairing and patching streets.
Locates shut-off valves with dip needles.

Important Job Functions

Performs routine maintenance on tools, equipment and vehicles.
Fills out work order forms; keeps daily log books.
Operates line truck, bush hog, dump truck and stump cutter.
Constructs forms for construction of catch basins, pipe junction boxes, etc.
Ensures materials and tools needed for scheduled jobs are loaded on truck.
Performs after hours on-call duties.
