Job Description

TxDOT’s New Braunfels Maintenance Office is responsible for maintaining approximately 800 miles of the State’s highway and roadway systems throughout Comal and parts of surrounding counties. Our Crew Chiefs play an essential leadership role in ensuring safe, efficient, and effective maintenance operations for the traveling public. In this role, you will lead and oversee maintenance crews, coordinate daily work activities, operate and oversee the use of heavy equipment, and ensure roadway maintenance, signage, debris removal, and other maintenance operations are completed safely and efficiently.

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

• Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
• Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
• Assists with surveying-related work.
• Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
• Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
• Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
• Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
• Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
• Operates light and heavy equipment.
• Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
• Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
• Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
