The College is seeking part-time tutors who are passionate about supporting the academic success of students enrolled at CT State CC. The Part‑Time Tutor provides academic support, assists with coursework, strengthens foundational skills, and fosters academic confidence and persistence. Tutors collaborate with faculty and program staff to promote student success in a structured and supportive learning environment.
In the Academic Center of Excellence (ACE), the Tutor provides tutorial services to students, one on one or in small groups at a community college. Incumbents provide this support in a specific learning unit or center such as science, technology, language arts or business administration. The tutor may also be involved in the setup, maintenance and operation of labs.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnder the direction of the Director of the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) the Tutor is accountable for providing assistance to faculty and students in assigned academic areas through effective performance in these essential functional areas:
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing individual and group tutoring.
- Assisting students in carrying out assignments, including giving supplemental instruction in the academic discipline being applied.
- Overseeing and guiding assigned student workers in their assistance to students.
- Observing and providing information to faculty on student performance and on those requiring special faculty instruction.
- Proctoring student exams.
- Setting up, arranging and testing lab equipment, apparatus and materials.
- Adapting equipment and materials to specific learning objectives set by faculty.
- Planning and preparing equipment and materials for future lab sessions.
- Performing routine cleaning and maintenance of lab equipment.
- Shipping and receiving supplies and equipment.
- Observing standards of safety in the set‑up, operation and disposal of lab supplies and equipment.
Associate degree in the assigned academic field or a closely related field with one (1) or more years of related teaching and/or tutoring experience; or an equivalent combination of experience and training which would lead to the competencies required to carry out the position’s essential duties.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience in tutoring and basic instruction in the assigned academic discipline.
- Knowledge of principles and concepts of the assigned academic discipline.
- Experience supporting students in academic goal setting and career planning.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
- Ability to provide academic support via video conferencing platforms.
- Two (2) years of relevant teaching and/or tutoring experience.
- Bilingual (Spanish).
- Prior experience using the Tutor Trac platform and Blackboard LMS (not all colleges require this experience).
- $34.06 hourly
