Introduction

Located in New Britain, CT, Central Connecticut State University (Central) is a constituent unit of the Board of Regents for Higher Education. The Police Department at Central is a fully sworn, nationally accredited police agency focused on ensuring health, safety, and providing a stable work and learning environment for campus community members and visitors.

Position Highlights
  • Full‑time, 40 hours per week
  • Shift work (1st, 2nd, 3rd) with possible holiday and weekend work
  • Mandatory Connecticut POST Police Officer Certification
Responsibilities
  • Provide crowd control at campus events and activities
  • Monitor designated areas to ensure physical security and authorized access, preventing theft, trespassing, vandalism, and violations of state statutes
  • Give direction and routine information to the public
  • Participate in evacuation activities during fire, bomb threats, or other potential disasters
  • Operate firefighting apparatus when needed
  • Conduct cruiser, foot, and bicycle patrols as weather permits
  • Provide traffic and crowd control
  • Assess need for further assistance and make timely arrangements
  • Gather background information and provide threat assessments regarding high‑risk locations, safety of persons or property, biological or physical threats
  • Respond to emergency situations; provide CPR or first aid to injured parties
  • Assist State Police in investigation of major criminal acts
  • Maintain building security and perform patrol duties at heightened alert level under Homeland Security procedures
  • Direct traffic and enforce motor vehicle and parking regulations
  • Initiate and conduct criminal and other investigations of violations, suspicious activities, or reported incidents
  • Conduct on‑site investigations, question witnesses, arrest individuals on scene, and issue summons
  • Record information; apply for and serve arrest warrants; process paperwork on arrests and activity reports; arrange bond payments or Written Promise to Appear (WPA)
  • Provide court testimony
  • Conduct special programs, projects, and services as required
  • Process arrested individuals, including determining charges, fingerprinting, photographing, initiating NCIC check, searching, removing, inventorying personal belongings, and transporting arrested persons to lock‑up
  • Conduct safety training, certification and/or recertification courses
  • Perform minor equipment repairs
  • Make public presentations regarding crime prevention and safety
  • Serve as dispatcher when required
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Certification as a law enforcement officer in the State of Connecticut pursuant to regulations promulgated by the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council
Substitutions Allowed
  • Successful completion of prescribed training and probationary requirements set forth in the class of Protective Services Trainee
Preferred Qualifications
  • Clear, effective writing and speaking across a variety of audiences
  • Thorough and precise work, with strong focus on accuracy and careful review
  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification
  • Field Training Officer certification
  • POST Certified Instructor
Special Requirements
  • Authorized to work lawfully in the United States by date of appointment
  • Must possess and maintain authority from the Commissioner of Emergency Services and Public Protection to arrest and present persons for offenses committed within the mandate
  • Maintain certification as a law enforcement officer in Connecticut; loss of certification results in removal from the class
  • Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle operator’s license and be eligible and qualified to bear arms
  • May be required to maintain additional certifications per department requirements
  • Must pass a swim test including 100‑yard swim within four minutes if assigned to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection
Physical & Working Conditions

Incumbents may be exposed to unpleasant or dangerous situations, uncomfortable weather conditions, and confinement in vehicles for prolonged periods. A comprehensive medical exam, including a controlled substance screening, will be required upon a conditional offer of employment.
