Position: Clerk 1 - Board of Taxation

The Middlesex County Board of Taxation is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Clerk
1. Under general supervision, the successful candidate will perform routine, non-routine, and moderately complex clerical duties in support of the operations of the Board of Taxation. Responsibilities include processing and maintaining official records, performing data entry and document management, assisting members of the public, and carrying out other administrative functions in accordance with established procedures, policies, and applicable regulations. The Clerk 1 will be expected to develop a thorough understanding of the functions and operations of the Board of Taxation and, with experience and training, assume responsibility for increasingly complex clerical and administrative assignments.

The position may also provide guidance and assistance to lower-level clerical staff as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Process, review, organize, and maintain deeds, tax appeals, and other documents and records submitted to or maintained by the Board of Taxation.
  • Perform data entry and maintain accurate electronic and manual records in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist with the processing, indexing, filing, scanning, and retrieval of official documents and records.
  • Receive, review, and route correspondence, applications, forms, and other materials as appropriate.
  • Respond to inquiries from taxpayers, property owners, municipal officials, attorneys, representatives, and members of the general public by telephone, email, and in person, providing information within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
  • Assist with the day-to-day administrative operations of the Board of Taxation office.
  • Utilize various electronic databases, software applications, document management systems, and other information systems after appropriate training.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain reports, correspondence, forms, and other documents as required.
  • Perform routine filing, copying, scanning, mail processing, and other general clerical functions.
  • Operate standard office equipment and perform routine maintenance as necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate discretion when handling official records and sensitive information.
  • Follow established office procedures, departmental regulations, and applicable policies and requirements.
  • Develop proficiency in the more complex functions and responsibilities of the Board of Taxation through training and practical experience.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to lower-level clerical staff regarding established procedures and work assignments, as directed.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Strong computer and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize department-specific software and information systems.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to interact professionally and courteously with coworkers, supervisors, public officials, attorneys, taxpayers, and members of the public.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform assigned duties accurately and within established time frames.
  • Previous clerical, administrative, governmental, or public-sector experience preferred.
  • Notary Public commission preferred, or willingness to obtain a commission within a reasonable period of time.
  • Bilingual proficiency desirable.
Requirements
  • Two (2) years of experience in taxation or related field work.
  • Must satisfy employer paid physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • NJ residency required by State Statute. R.S.52:14-7.
Working Environment

The position requires regular interaction with coworkers, supervisory personnel, municipal representatives, taxpayers, attorneys, and members of the general public. The successful candidate must demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, discretion, and the ability to maintain accurate records while managing multiple assignments and priorities.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is:

  • $46,000 – $68,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
