OverviewRutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a leading national research university and the state of New Jersey’s preeminent, comprehensive public institution of higher education. Established in 1766, the university is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the United States. More than 69,000 students and 23,200 full- and part‑time faculty and staff learn, work, and serve the public at Rutgers locations across New Jersey and around the world.
The School of Communication and Information (SC&I) is a dynamic center of learning at the heart of the Rutgers‑New Brunswick campus. Founded in 1982, SC&I research and teaching is delivered by three academic departments:
Communication, Journalism and Media Studies, and Library and Information Science. Through five undergraduate majors and minors, three master’s degrees, and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program, the school teaches over 8,400 students each year, of whom 2,600 are our own undergraduate, master, and doctoral students. Geographically adjacent and closely connected to the world’s largest media and information hubs and supported by Rutgers’ vibrant scholarly community, SC&I embraces the university goals of promoting diversity throughout our networks and programs, and is strongly committed to social engagement.
The Department of Communication is dedicated to advancing knowledge about communication and its practice in society. The department examines how meaning is created and negotiated in human interaction to address the personal, professional, and public communication challenges and opportunities posed by 21st‑century life. Our students become leaders in private, public and civil sectors by developing a deep and practical appreciation of how communication shapes the world in which we live.
Research from SC&I’s renowned faculty experts examines the complexity of communication processes related to five focal areas: communication and technology, health communication, interpersonal communication, language and social interaction, and organizational communication. SC&I’s students may also acquire knowledge and skills allowing them to pursue careers related to strategic communication and public relations, leadership, health and wellness, relational and family communication, and a range of other options.
