The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations. This includes an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey, encompassing planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Operating Engineer II for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the direction of the College Ave. Central Heating Plant Chief, the incumbent will maintain, operate and repair the stationary steam boilers and auxiliary equipment throughout the Rutgers Campus.
Responsibilities- Responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of boilers, motors, pumps, compressors, valves and other auxiliary equipment.
- Operates boilers and pressure vessels at maximum efficiency at all times, resulting in minimum energy consumption.
- Periodically makes comprehensive tests, takes readings of fuel consumption pressure, draft conditions, temperatures, flow and other recordings.
- Adds chemicals to treat steam, water, fuel in accordance with requirements prescribed.
- Ensures compliance with all regulations.
- Keeps work area clean and neat. Performs a variety of maintenance duties as directed by Plant Manager or Senior Shift Supervisor.
- Makes continual inspections of equipment and systems in area of responsibility and reports conditions to the Plant Manager and Senior Shift Supervisor.
- Must be available to cover shifts in emergencies.
- Completes all paperwork in a timely manner. Maintains logs, records and files of all auxiliary plants. Gives detailed exchange of information to relieving operator, continually inspects equipment, uses knowledge of plant layout and seeks alternate ways of maintaining continuous operation. Analyzes problems, both causes and effects, and takes corrective action as needed.
- Understands and adheres to Rutgers’ compliance standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy. Must comply with 12:90 Pressure Vessel Compliance Guidelines.
- Knowledge of computerized monitoring systems and computerized work order systems.
Minimum Education and Experience
- A minimum of two years experience in the operation of steam, hot water boilers.
- Also auxiliary equipment as it relates to the boiler plant operation.
Certifications and Licenses
- A minimum of a blue seal is required for this position.
- A valid driver’s license is required as well as completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position requires the individual to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, to reach with hands and arms, to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, to talk or hear and taste or smell over 2/3 of the time; to climb or balance up 2/3 of the time and less than 1/3 of the time to sit. The position requires lifting more than 100 pounds under 1/3 of the time, but up to 25 pounds 2/3 of the time and up to 100 pounds 1/3 of the time.
There are no special vision requirements because all apply.
Specific duties that require these physical demands:
- Standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, using hands to isolate, open and close valves; to lift ladders, climb and balance on stationary and mobile ladders; to hear audible alarms and communicate via various media.
- Move a 55‑gallon drum or handle 30 lb. bags of salt for softeners.
