Associate Director of Clinical Trials Finance

As a key member of the Office of Human Research Services, the Associate Director develops and analyzes financial data to support clinical trial operations. This role leads internal and external teams to ensure budget consistency, using university systems to align financials across sponsored and non-sponsored accounts for forecasting and strategic decision-making.

Essential Functions
  • Financial Strategy & Oversight
    • Develop/manage financial plans, budgets, forecasts for clinical trials, including grants, OHRS fees, and third‑party costs.
    • Provide financial guidance to leadership on investments and resource distribution.
    • Oversee the full financial cycle: budget development, contract negotiation support, revenue recognition, and expenditure tracking.
    • Ensure compliance with sponsor requirements and institutional policies.
  • Budget and Contract Management
    • Lead financial negotiations for clinical trial contracts, ensuring fair market value and department alignment.
    • Collaborate with legal to negotiate investigator site agreements and Master Service agreements.
    • Liaise with the University Budget Office and Rutgers Health for required sponsored clinical trial budget data uploads.
  • Analysis and Reporting
    • Develop processes for tracking budget variances and providing performance‑versus‑actual insights.
    • Create ad‑hoc financial models and long‑range projections (fringe rates, cost of living).
    • Present financial reports highlighting trends, risks, and opportunities to senior leadership.
  • Operations & Site Management
    • Manage reconciliation of the health system and Rutgers payment/invoices.
    • Lead trial close‑out, including final payments and reconciliation.
    • Implement budget control policies to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Team Leadership
    • Supervise, train, evaluate staff, and assist with hiring and promotions.
    • Direct staff on fiscal matters, including purchase requisitions and cost center balances.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
  • Five years of professional level progressively more responsible experience in clinical‑trial budget preparation, administration, and control in a health‑care/academic environment. Plus three years of relevant experience in a management role.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification preferred.
  • Experience with OnCore™ CTMS preferred.
  • Knowledge of how to accomplish superior performance in a unionized environment is preferred.
  • Equivalent education, experience, and/or training may be substituted for degree requirement.
