The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) at Bristol Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital (BMSCH) at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) is a senior leader on the RWJUH leadership team. The CAO is the senior administrative leader of BMSCH and is charged with developing the state’s leading children’s hospital. The CAO is responsible for BMSCH’s day‑to‑day operations and its operational results. In conjunction with the leadership of the RWJBH Children’s Health service line, the CAO will help develop the pediatric strategic direction and develop programs to achieve it.
ReportsTo
- The CAO, BMSCH at RWJUH reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, with a matrixed reporting relationship to the Senior Vice President, RWJBH Children’s Health Service Line.
- Master’s degree in business or health administration.
- Minimum 10 years progressive experience in leading clinical services.
- Knowledge and experience performing financial management, strategic planning and implementation, business/program development, process improvement, outcomes measurement, reporting, physician compensation development, and human resource management functions.
- Financial and operational analytical skills required, including profit and loss, reimbursement analysis, business trends and process analysis, and identification of system weaknesses.
- A proven ability to build consensus and motivate teams of diverse, multidisciplinary, and multi‑departmental stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively at all levels of a complex organization.
- Ability to communicate information in a clear and concise manner that is comprehensible to a wide range of stakeholders.
- Ability to utilize metrics and technology in a way that drives excellence, supports operations and facilitates integration across a historically disparate organization.
- Unimpeachable professional and personal integrity; apparent energy, drive and passion for excellence.

- Management experience in pediatric services, ideally in a children’s hospital and academic medicine setting.
- Achievement in U.S. News Best Children’s Hospital rankings.
- Oversight of physician practices / collaboration with physician leaders.
- Experience working in a matrixed reporting environment.
- Leads the BMSCH management team and holds accountable for results, identifies management staff educational and development needs, facilitates staff involvement and ensures staff engagement.
- Analyzes standards of practice, policies, and procedures on an ongoing basis. Ensures BMSCH achieves goals for quality, safety and patient satisfaction and achieves goals related to The Joint Commission disease‑specific certifications, American College of Surgeons, U.S. News and World Report Best Children’s Hospitals and other accreditations.
- Works with RWJUH and service line leadership to develop strategic plan for BMSCH. With finance, develops business/financial model for the plan and executes the business/program plan for BMSCH.
- Works with RWJUH/BMSCH marketing team to promote services.
- With Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Children’s Health leadership, develops the plan to support and grow programs and works with Medical School leaders and Physician Recruitment to execute.
