Job OverviewThe Pharmacy Technicianassistspharmacists in all aspects of pharmacy practice and performs any dutiesrequiredto provide and ensure good patient care and safety as requested. Follows workflow as appropriate.
Qualifications- Must be a high school graduate or GED equivalent.
- Must be able to read,writeand speak fluent English.
- Must be PTCB certified or receive certification within 1 year of hire. Requiredtomaintain PTCB certification.
- Must be registered with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacy Technician.
Prior experience as a pharmacy technician is preferred.
Essential FunctionsDrug Distribution
- Refills unit-dose medication bins and deliverscontentsto nursing units.
- Collects and processes medication orders prior to distribution. Delivers prepared medication to nursing units, as assigned.
- Performs necessary tasks related to patient transfer and discharge; record-keeping and transfer of medications.
- Delivery of controlled substances to all hospital areas.
- Maintenance of all automatic dispensing machines (ADMs).
- Checks for and removes expired medications from stock.
- Restocks code carts.
- Prepares and labels outpatient prescriptions.
- Prepares and labels extemporaneously compounded non-sterile pharmaceuticals.
Sterile IV Admixture Service
- Sterile/non-sterile product preparation.
- Performs required calculations for all aspects of medication dispensing and compounding.
- Using aseptic technique, prepares and labels all sterile products.
- Maintains the integrity of laminar air flow hoods by cleaning and following proper procedures.
- Delivers intravenous solutions to nursing units.
- Monitors IV schedules and unused IV solutions on select nursing units to increase efficiency and avoid waste.
Satellite Responsibilities
- Orders and replaces stock in the pharmacy satellite.
- Departmental record keeping, billing, controlled substance processing.
- Maintenance of missing medication message queue.
Answers and directs telephone calls and other inquiries including those from medical staff and nursing staff in a professional and courteous manner.
