Position: Senior IT Accessibility Specialist (Application Developer I)

Senior IT Accessibility Specialist (Application Developer I)

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an experienced IT accessibility specialist to join the Enterprise Application Services (EAS) Office of the CIO and the Office of Information Technology (OIT). The candidate will support accessibility compliance across technology procurement, vendors, and internal systems. The role reports to the Director, IT Accessibility.

Responsibilities
  • Review University IT assets—sites, systems, and applications—for accessibility issues and recommend remediation.
  • Provide first‑ and second‑level end‑user accessibility support, including facilitation of the university’s accessibility barrier reporting.
  • Perform accessibility testing, review vendor documentation, and make recommendations on potential technology purchases.
  • Develop and deliver training workshops and educational programs to raise awareness of accessibility within the university community.
  • Adhere to Rutgers compliance standards as outlined in the RBHS Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Assist in creating a risk‑based approach to contract review and develop associated assessment tools and resources.
  • Advise IT staff across schools, colleges, and departments on selecting and using hardware and software assistive technologies.
  • Serve as a resource for the campus community on IT disability issues and conduct educational events to advance compliance.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field plus three (3) years of experience in the field of accessibility.
  • Understanding of WCAG 2.1 and application of digital accessibility and Section 504/508 law.
  • Best practices for accessible websites and applications, PDF accessibility, and web development platforms such as Drupal and Word Press.
  • Accessibility auditing, consulting, and training experience.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent internal and external customer service, confident in presenting ideas and designs, and strong technical writing skills.
  • Passion for product process and innovation, with excellent organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Trusted Tester or other accessibility‑related certifications or credentials.
  • Experience with assistive technology tools or interest in learning them.
  • Experience developing and delivering training workshops and webinars.
  • Analytical skill for complex contract analysis and problem resolution.
  • Knowledge of web development platforms such as Drupal, Word Press, or similar.
  • Experience or familiarity with scripting languages such as PHP or JavaScript.
Salary

Grade 27S – Exempt. Minimum Salary: $77,661;
Mid‑Range Salary: $93,390;
Maximum Salary: $111,027.

Work Arrangement

Full‑time position (37.5 hours per week). A hybrid work arrangement may be possible under Rutgers policy and collective bargaining agreement, subject to approval.
