Job Description

RWJBH is seeking a Per Diem variable days/night/weekends/holidays Advanced Practice Provider in the Trauma Surgery service line department at the New Brunswick campus. The Advanced Practice Provider is responsible for performing duties independently following established and standardized procedures and methods, referring questionable situations to a physician. The APP provides rapid response care through assessment, diagnosis, clinical judgment and management to restore, maintain and improve the health status of patients.

In addition, the APP is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments and medical errors. This is a hospital based position.

  • Effective time management and patient care skills
  • Ability to adapt and adjust to a large volume acute patient population
  • Ability to assess and present critical patient concerns clearly and concisely
  • Ability to work collegially with the trauma surgical resident team
  • 2-4 years of surgery experience required
  • Must be able to step in and start working efficiently immediately with no training

Essential Functions
  • Inpatient pre-op and post-op management
  • Performing consults and facilitating patient throughput with proper discharge planning
  • Providing wound care and other bedside procedures
  • Trauma bay resuscitation responsibilities (no operating room duties)
  • Responding calmly during trauma situations
  • Administer injections, immunizations, oral medications, and start IVs
  • Assist physician by recording progress notes, issuing diagnostic orders, and transcribing orders
  • Assist with counseling and education functions
  • Billing for patient services based on CMS and NJ State Board Regulations
  • Provide appropriate care for patients, demonstrating satisfactory knowledge and judgment
  • Develop plan of care for patients in coordination with multidisciplinary team and complete reports to physicians and family
  • Document and maintain patient records of services provided per facility and nursing standards
  • Establish relationships with other medical providers
  • Examine patients to determine presence of illness, utilize physical findings, laboratory results, medical history, and prescribe treatments
  • Interview, instruct, and advise patients on health and illness prevention and medication treatment instructions
  • Issue prescriptions to patients in accordance with Federal & State Regulations
  • Order and review appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures, review lab data, and document findings
  • Participate in the development of protocols
  • Obtain completed medical history and physical data on patients with appropriate documentation
  • Perform independent evaluations and treatment procedures in emergency situations
  • Provide monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits
  • Coordinate nursing and training programs in compliance with policies such as HIPAA, OSHA, Code of Conduct
  • Maintain the quality and adequacy of nursing practice
  • Review and audit charts routinely
  • Suture wounds, incise, and drain wounds, and repair lacerations
  • Work in collaboration with a physician to diagnose conditions as necessary
