Position Overview
Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC), a part of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Part‑time Staff Nurse for Southwoods State Prison located in Bridgeton, NJ. The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to provide ambulatory care to inmates and staff, works collaboratively with health‑care professionals and security officers, and functions under nursing protocols.
Responsibilities- Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmate patients, including adults (18‑64) and geriatrics (65+).
- Utilize effective communication skills, demonstrating respect, concern, and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships.
- Attend in‑service and continuing education offerings to maintain necessary skills.
- Participate in educating inmates, security officers, and other members of the health‑care team.
- Attend or teach in‑service meetings and educational programs as approved by supervisor.
Competency in assessment and identification of the physical health of adults (18‑64) and geriatrics (65+), and the ability to identify inmate‑centered goals and implement nursing interventions.
QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
- CPR certification.
- Nursing license in New Jersey.
- Valid driver’s license; must have own vehicle or alternative transportation between sites.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year’s experience in a correctional setting.
- Physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes.
- Ability to lift and carry an emergency treatment bag up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients up to 50 pounds.
- Must be approved by the Department of Corrections and adhere to all DOC requirements.

Part‑time position, 20 hours per week (standard 40‑hour week), evening shift, full onsite arrangement.
