University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) operates within Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. UCHC provides physical, mental health, dental and specialized treatment services to individuals involved in the criminal justice system in New Jersey. The program employs approximately 1,000 staff with a total budget of $150 million.
ResponsibilitiesThe Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health‑care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus for inmates in the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
Duties include:
- Providing direct and indirect nursing care for residents, including adolescents (13‑17 years), adults (18‑64 years), and their families, within the correctional framework.
- Performing assessments in various settings such as initial intake, health‑care units, sick calls, emergency situations, chronic‑care clinics, and infirmary.
- Working collaboratively with health‑care professionals, security officers, and other stakeholders in the correctional environment.
- Identifying inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives and implementing prescribed interventions.
- Planning nursing care based on assessments.
- Initiating timely referrals, leading as charge nurse or team leader, delegating duties based on team member competence, and guiding care provision.
Required:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a New Jersey nursing license.
- At least one (1) year of psychiatric nursing experience.
- Certificate of CPR certification.
- Computer literacy.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from the facility.
Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.

First responders must be able to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes, lift and carry an emergency treatment bag up to 45 pounds, and assist in lifting or rotating patients up to 50 pounds.
Special ConditionsMust be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
