Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a Full Time Staff Nurse for Northern State Prison located in Newark, NJ. The Staff Nurse will utilize the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs, primarily ambulatory care for inmates in the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
- Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the resident‑patient including adolescents (13‑17 years), adults (18‑64 years) and their family within the framework established by the correctional system.
- Perform assessments of resident‑patient in a variety of settings such as initial intake area, health care unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic care clinics and infirmary.
- Work with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment.
- Identify inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives and implement prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.
- Plan nursing care by identifying resident‑patient needs based on assessments. Make appropriate, timely referrals and initiate appropriate nursing care based on institutional policies and procedures.
- As team leader or charge nurse, delegate duties to other health care team members based on their skill, knowledge and experience and guide the provision of care by others.
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in New Jersey.
- License to practice in the State of New Jersey.
- CPR Certification required.
- Valid Driver's License required; own vehicle or alternative transportation necessary.
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.
First responder must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Physically able to lift and carry an emergency treatment bag that can weigh up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).
Special ConditionsMust be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
