Staff Nurse – Mental Health (Part Time, Day Shift) – Edna Mahan Correctional Facility
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Part‑time Staff Nurse to provide mental‑health and ambulatory nursing care to inmates at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton, NJ.
Job SummaryThe Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health‑care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus for inmates in the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
Responsibilities- Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological and emotional needs of residents, including adolescents (13‑17 years), adults (18‑64 years) and their families within the correctional framework.
- Performs assessments of residents in various settings such as initial intake area, health‑care unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic‑care clinics and infirmary.
- Works with a variety of health‑care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment.
- Identifies inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives, implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.
- Plans nursing care by identifying resident needs based on assessments, making appropriate, timely referrals, and initiating care per institutional policies and procedures.
- As team leader or charge nurse, delegates duties to other health‑care team members based on their skill, knowledge and experience and guides the provision of care by others.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in New Jersey.
- Minimum of one (1) year of psychiatric nursing experience.
Certifications/Licenses
- Licensed Nurse in the State of New Jersey.
- CPR certification.
- Valid driver’s license required; must have own vehicle or alternative means of transportation between sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
Must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes and lift a 45‑pound emergency treatment bag upstairs. Must be able to assist in lifting and rotating patients weighing up to 50 pounds.
Special ConditionsMust be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
Immunization RequirementsUnder Policy 100.3.1, if employment begins during Flu Season, Rutgers may require proof of vaccination against Seasonal Influenza for the current season, unless a medical or religious exemption is granted. Failure to provide proof may result in rescission of the offer.
