Job SummaryRutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a full‑time Staff Nurse for Northern State Prison located in Newark, NJ. The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet the health care needs of inmates, with a primary focus on ambulatory care. Responsibilities include assessing and caring for residents of all ages and guiding a team of health‑care professionals.
Responsibilities- Provide direct and indirect nursing care to inmates, addressing physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs.
- Perform assessments in various settings such as initial intake, health‑care unit for sick call, emergency situations, chronic care clinics, and infirmary.
- Collaborate with health‑care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment.
- Identify inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives and implement interventions and solutions.
- Plan nursing care based on assessments, make timely referrals, and initiate appropriate care per institutional policies.
- As a team leader or charge nurse, delegate duties to other team members based on their skill and experience, and guide the provision of care.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
Certifications and Licenses
- Licensed to practice in the State of New Jersey.
- CPR certification required.
- Valid driver’s license; must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation between sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.
Must be able to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes and lift or carry an emergency treatment bag of up to 45 pounds. Aid in lifting and rotating patients up to 50 pounds.
Special ConditionsMust be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
