Position Overview
Staff Nurse PT Days UCHC NSP (Multiple Vacancies) – Part Time, 20 hours per week, Day shift, located at Northern State Prison (Newark, NJ). Working in a correctional health care setting under Rutgers University Correctional Health Care.
ResponsibilitiesThe Staff Nurse applies the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus for inmates in the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
- Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of resident‑patients, including adolescents (13‑17 years), adults (18‑64 years) and their families within the correctional system framework.
- Performs assessments of resident‑patients in varied settings such as initial intake area, healthcare unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic care clinics and infirmary.
- Works with various health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment.
- Identifies inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for identified problems.
- Plans nursing care based on assessments, makes timely referrals and initiates care in accordance with institutional policies and procedures.
- As a team leader or charge nurse, delegates duties to other health care team members based on their skills and experience and guides the provision of care by others.
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
- License to practice in the State of New Jersey.
- CPR certification required.
- Valid driver's license required; must possess own vehicle or alternative transportation between sites.
- Preferred:
Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent. - Preferred:
Minimum of one year of experience in a correctional setting.
Physical demands: perform CPR for at least 10 minutes; lift and carry emergency treatment bag up to 45 pounds; assist in lifting and rotating patients up to 50 pounds.
