Staff Nurse Per Diem – Northern State Prison, Newark, NJ. The role is a per‑dime staff nurse working in a correctional environment, focusing on ambulatory care.
OverviewUniversity Correctional Health Care (UCHC), part of Rutgers University, provides physical, mental, dental, and sex offender treatment services to individuals involved in New Jersey’s criminal justice system. UCHC operates with a budget of $150 million and approximately 1,000 staff.
Posting SummaryThe Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of healthcare needs in a correctional setting.
Duties include:
- Working with healthcare professionals and security officers in a correctional environment, following nursing protocols and leading teams as assigned.
- Assessing and identifying the health of adults (18‑64) and geriatrics (65+) and documenting physical assessments.
- Identifying inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives, implementing prescribed interventions to address identified problems.
- Providing direct and indirect nursing care to meet the physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmate patients.
Minimum
Education and Experience:
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in New Jersey.
- CPR certification required.
- Computer literacy.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid driver’s license and own vehicle or alternative transportation to travel between sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent preferred.
- At least one year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The first responder must be able to perform CPR for at least ten minutes, lift and carry a 45‑pound emergency treatment bag, and assist in lifting and rotating patients weighing up to 50 pounds.
Special Conditions:
Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
