Posting SummaryRutgers is seeking a Nurse Anesthetist (Certified Registered) for the department of Anesthesiology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The primary purpose of the position is to administer anesthesia–related care in four general categories: (1) pre‑anesthetic preparation and evaluation, (2) anesthesia induction, maintenance and emergence, (3) post anesthesia care, and (4) peri anesthetic and clinical support functions.
Key Responsibilities- Perform and document a pre‑anesthetic assessment and evaluation, including requesting consultations, ordering diagnostic studies, selecting and administering pre‑anesthetic medications and fluids, and obtaining informed consent.
- Develop and implement an anesthetic plan.
- Select and initiate the planned anesthetic technique, including general, regional, local anesthesia and intravenous sedation/monitored anesthesia care (MAC).
- Select, obtain or administer anesthetics and ancillary drugs to maintain physiological homeostasis and correct abnormal responses.
- Select, apply or insert appropriate non‑invasive and invasive monitoring modalities and interpret patient physiological data.
- Manage the patient’s airway and pulmonary status with endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacologic support, respiratory therapy or extubation.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Anesthesia Education Program with a Master’s Degree in a related field; or graduation from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education prior to January 1998.
Certifications / Licenses
- Successfully completed the National Certification Examination to be a CRNA and maintain current certification.
- Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in the State of New Jersey and current certification as a Nurse Anesthetist by the Council on Certification/recertification of Nurse Anesthetists of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
- Successful completion of Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Observe patients and patient monitors with sufficient sensory capacity.
- Communicate effectively in academic and healthcare settings.
- Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills, teamwork, good judgment, and the ability to function effectively under uncertainty inherent in clinical practice.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Required sensory skills adequate for physical examination; adequate vision, hearing, tactile sensation, motor function, and endurance for sitting, standing, and moving patients.
- Ability to measure, calculate, reason, analyze, and synthesize in quiet and noisy environments; ability to interpret monitor displays, understand relationships among structures, and read medical literature.
- Exposure to radiation, nitrous oxide, anesthetic agents, or infectious agents with appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
- Ancillary privileges granted by the University Hospital Medical Staff must be obtained upon hire.
- Applicants who lack Advanced Practice Nurse certification will not administer anesthesia.
- New graduates may be employed after obtaining an Advanced Practice Nurse work permit and passing the national certification examination.
