About the Position

The Biomechanics of Blood Lab at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ) is led by Dr. Valerie Tutwiler and utilizes multidisciplinary approaches to tackle fundamental questions related to understanding what causes bleeding and thrombosis in patients. We seek a full‑time Postdoctoral Associate to work on NIH funded projects focused on blood clot formation, mechanics, and clot stability.

The position will begin as early as November 1, 2025.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate patient samples and develop testing methods to quantify large‑scale bulk mechanics in blood clots (both plasma and whole blood).
  • Assist in executing research experiments and data analysis related to blood clot mechanics.
  • Collaborate with team members and contribute to manuscript preparation.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline.
  • Strong background in rheological testing, viscoelastic properties, or coagulation and hemostasis.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and conduct independent research experiments.
  • Ability to interpret and explain the theoretical basis of the work.

  • Experience with large‑scale mechanical testing, proteomics, and rotational rheometers.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

The candidate should be able to lift 20 lbs overhead unassisted. Work is primarily in person wet‑lab work in a BSL‑1 laboratory, with some data analysis and written work possible remotely. The laboratory space is approximately 600 sq ft with 150 ft of bench space, equipped with gas/vacuum lines, fume hoods, two
-80 °C freezers, confocal and scanning electron microscopes, large‑scale mechanical testers, proteomics testing, and two rotational rheometers.

Immunization Requirements

Depending on the timing of employment, proof of seasonal influenza vaccination may be required unless a medical or religious exemption is granted.
