Posting SummaryRutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Security Officer/Parking Enforcement for the Division of Public Safety. The position reports to a Security Supervisor or other University Police personnel as directed. The role safeguards the life, property and well‑being of the university community and performs a broad range of security and parking enforcement duties.
Key Responsibilities- Perform a wide variety of security and parking functions to ensure the safety of persons, protect property, maintain order and enforce university rules.
- Observe, recognize and report conditions that adversely affect public safety or university policy.
- Issue written Security Failure Notices and University Parking Summons.
- Safeguard the life, property and well‑being of all members and guests of the university community.
- Provide assistance regarding directions, emergencies and special requests.
- Control vehicular and pedestrian traffic in university parking lots.
- Examine doors, windows and gates to ensure security.
- Use university keys and/or slide cards to open and secure buildings.
- Monitor closed buildings for unauthorized persons and other suspicious activities; patrol parking areas and campus buildings, issuing University Parking Summons and Security Failure Notices.
- File written and oral reports and maintain necessary records.
- Provide security, parking enforcement and limited traffic control service for special events and escort service as assigned.
- Detect and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, inoperable lights and malfunctioning security doors.
- Assist in the recommendation and/or installation of signage.
- Sound alarm in case of office and notify University Police of unauthorized persons.
- Recognize and report emergency and questionable conditions to supervisors and/or University Police, including maintenance needs, vehicle removal or suspicious conditions requiring police response.
- Provide security escorts as assigned.
- Operate university vehicles, including shuttle vans and specialized vans, including transporting persons with special needs.
- Monitor boiler, heating and air conditioning warning signals for proper operation during evening and night hours.
- Reduce or minimize low‑level conflict such as disputes over parking tickets or orders to vacate a building.
- Maintain a positive work environment through cooperative and professional communication with students, faculty, visitors, co‑workers and supervisors.
- Enter computer data into handheld or desktop equipment, regulate visitor access, process packages and use handheld metal detectors, operate CCTV equipment and enforce residence life policies.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with two years of driving experience and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
- Must maintain a professional demeanor and appearance pursuant to departmental guidelines.
- Must be able to work independently and perform related duties as required.
- Ability to effectively communicate in English, including under stress, both in writing and via two‑way radio.
- Ability to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.
- Mandatory overtime required as necessary.
- Successfully complete NJ CUPSA Basic Security Officer Training Class and maintain applicable certification.
- Agree to undergo and authorize criminal background and child abuse record checks as required by New Jersey law.
- Assume any costs incurred by the university associated with background investigations.
- Any criminal record will affect consideration.
- Previous security or parking enforcement experience.
