Summary:

This is a temporary position for the New Brunswick, NJ location. Construction/Laborer employees are members of the Gas Distribution department. The work includes constructing, operating, maintaining and repairing gas facilities. The use of jackhammer, tamping, and digging equipment is essential to this job. This is a Safety Sensitive Position - D.O.T. testing is required. Safe driving record required. Must obtain a Class A Driver's License within one year from date of hire.

Job Responsibilities

Under directive supervision, construct, operate, maintain and repair mains, services, and associated equipment; carry through assignments, at times, with the assistance of other employees of equal or lesser grade; perform duties such as:

  • Install and repair all types of mains, services, and associated equipment such as sleeves, fittings, and valves
  • Under close supervision, install and operate all types of equipment necessary to control the flow of gas in mains such as stoppers, bags, stoppering off machines, valves, cocks, and similar equipment
  • Under close supervision, operate drilling and tapping machines, pipe saws, and similar hand or power-operated equipment regularly used by a street crew in the installation and repair of mains, services and associated equipment
  • Read suitable gauges during pressure tests, purging and gassing out mains and services as directed
  • Repair manholes, valve boxes, and similar installations as part of a street crew
  • Disconnect and reconnect meters and service regulators when required in connection with service piping repair or renewal
  • Install materials used for corrosion protection
  • Replace and repair pavements, sidewalks and lawns; operate necessary equipment in the course of the job
  • Take temporary charge of the job in the absence of the Street Leader (Working) or Construction Supervisor
  • Turn on meters, gas out and turn on all residential type gas appliances in residential and commercial establishments when turned off in connection with Street Department work
  • Reconstruct meter sets in one and two family residences to conform to Company standards utilizing the existing meter and service regulator when required in connection with renewal or repair of service piping and relocation of the service
  • Install prefabricated meter sets on outside installations not including house piping
  • Operate all types of motor vehicles
  • Load, unload, transport (including use of trailer) and operate non-riding excavating and non-riding plowing-in type equipment
  • Hook up and haul intermediate size riding equipment (5000 lb. gross weight maximum) already loaded on trailer to and from work locations
  • May install meters and service regulators in residential and small industrial and commercial customer premises defined as those requiring up to and including a 425 size meter
  • New meter installations will be left locked off
  • Operate trenching machines up to 5,000 lb. gross weight maximum
  • Perform markout work except that associated with PSE&G contractor jobs
Job Qualifications

High school diploma or GED. Minimum 3 months construction, manufacturing, mechanical or related work experience. Physically able to perform heavy construction work. Willing to work outside in all types of weather. Successfully pass the Gas Battery pre placement test before hire. Successfully complete required training after hire. Position is considered DOT safety sensitive and is subject to random drug testing.

Physical requirements:

Walking, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling and lifting up to 100 lbs. Valid U. S. driver's license and maintain a safe and satisfactory driving record. CDL Class A is required within one year of employment. Storm duty:
As needed. Desired Outside construction work experience. Mechanical aptitude.
