Social-First Reporter

Delaware Online is seeking a creative, service-minded social-first reporter to help expand our reach and capture the voice and mood of Delaware through compelling social-media storytelling.

Responsibilities:
  • The reporter will focus on short-form, social media video with the ability to reverse-publish their work on Delaware Online and related sites.
  • The reporter will engage our audience on key social media platforms in a way that isn't just traditional reporting. It is engaging the audience with voice and authority on topics.
  • The reporter will serve as a highly visible public presence for Delaware Online, engaging audiences on key issues through original reporting and by showcasing the work of colleagues across our newsroom. You must be comfortable on both sides of the camera.
  • The reporter will be someone who will become immersed in Delaware – living, working, dining, paying bills and understanding and embracing everything that makes up the First State.
  • The ideal candidate will combine sharp news instincts with a deep understanding of how Delawareans connect and share information online.
  • The reporter will also play a central role in the network's grocery initiative, delivering high-impact journalism that helps readers shop smarter and better understand how food prices, access, and trends shape daily life.
  • This role is ideal for a journalist who is equally comfortable reporting a quick-turn consumer news story, shooting and producing their own video, and appearing on camera across social and digital platforms.
  • In this role you must be able to adjust to new technologies.
  • Strong writing, reporting and multimedia storytelling skills are a must. Familiarity with SEO, social media best practices, and audience analytics are also crucial.
  • This job is for a self-starting reporter who can work independently and collaboratively on deadline.
  • Video production or editing skills (preferred).
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or master's in communications, journalism or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of writing/journalism/newsroom and video production experience.
  • Strong command of grammar and style.
  • Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready."
  • Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.
  • Comfort using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to enhance reporting and promote stories.
  • Understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing.
  • Excel in a fast-paced news environment and understands the digital-first mission.
  • Collaborate well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.
