Job Goal

Responsible for providing support and assistance to a specific special education student(s) to attain IEP goals and educational objectives. The para educator works at the direction of building administration, special education and/or regular education teachers and related service professionals. Develops and promotes good community relations on behalf of the assigned student’s needs and school goals.

Job Qualifications
  • Para educator permit required
  • Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher learning, or an associate’s (or higher) degree, or demonstrated, through a state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Cooperative attitude and strong work ethic for performing in a team-oriented work environment.
  • Previous positive experience(s) in working with children.
  • Knowledge of how to assist children with learning activities, including the use of a computer.

The Department of Education defines “two years of study” as the successful completion of 60 semester hours of college coursework at an accredited institution of higher learning, ideally in general and educational studies, including reading, writing and mathematics, content and pedagogy.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform very heavy work, including the ability to exert 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or in excess of 50 pounds frequently; and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May be required to support the weight of a student to prevent them from falling, and supervise the child during toileting activities.

Essential Functions
  • Attend to the needs of the student, which has necessitated the assignment of a one-on-one aide (i.e., instructional, behavior support, personal hygiene assistance, etc.).
  • Assist with specific activities (i.e., toileting, diapering, bus transition, etc.) with frequency as necessary.
  • Assist in a variety of instructional and other related activities with an individual student as assigned by the administration/teacher.
  • Work closely with the teacher to ensure that the student is progressing toward the educational goals established.
  • Assist the teacher in establishing and maintaining a classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Assist in the supervision, monitoring and personal support of students through assigned duties (hallways, lunchroom, bus duty); ensure appropriate conduct during these periods.
  • Participate in district/school/departmental meetings as deemed appropriate.
  • Assist students with disabilities in meeting their physical needs (lifting, toileting, positioning, transferring, feeding) and provide physical assistance in emergency situations.
  • Monitor activities and behavior of children to ensure physical and environmental safety, and adherence to appropriate conduct and disciplinary controls.
  • Assist teachers in checking and objectively evaluating progress; assist children with support to the educational process individually and in small groups, reinforcing skills based on instructional guidelines.
  • Attend professional development activities as deemed appropriate.
  • Act as a positive role model for students through appropriate personal conduct and professional attire.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
