Job Summary

The Instructor’s job is to ensure that all students are learning at a high level and creating a classroom where students are challenged to critically think and problem-solve.

Instructional Process
  • Plan and implement an instruction program that adheres to school goals and objectives, Delaware State Standards, and the Common Core State Standards.
  • Create purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that maximize student time on task.
  • Design a program of study to meet individual student needs.
  • Establish a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of teaching strategies.
  • Encourage student enthusiasm for the learning process and develop good study habits.
  • Complete progress reports and trimester report cards as scheduled.
  • Prepare substitute folders with necessary information and copies as required by administration.
  • Prescribe purposeful assignments for paraprofessionals, interventionists, tutors, and volunteers as needed.
  • Recognize learning problems and make appropriate referrals.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of content matters.
  • Use effective oral and written expression.
Curriculum Development
  • Maintain current knowledge of subject matter and learning theory, and share this knowledge to improve the school’s curriculum.
  • Actively participate in all team meetings, PLC meetings, and planned professional development sessions.
  • Become acquainted with supplemental services beneficial to students as an extension of regular classroom activities.
Classroom Management
  • Develop reasonable rules and techniques for classroom behavior consistent with school guidelines.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Share responsibility for student supervision during all school activities, both inside and outside the building.
Public Relations
  • Uphold and enforce board policy, administrative procedures, school rules, and regulations, supporting them to the public.
  • Maintain appropriate work habits, including punctual attendance and responsible use of planning time.
  • Communicate the positive aspects of our school program to the public.
  • Collaborate with parents to strengthen the educational program for their children.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other staff members.
Professional Growth
  • Continue professional growth by attending PLC meetings, workshops, seminars, conferences, and advanced courses at institutions of higher learning.
  • Maintain membership in appropriate professional organizations.
  • Cooperate with administration in planning and participating in in-service training programs at the school or district level.
  • Attend all staff, department, and committee meetings on time as required.
Student Evaluation
  • Evaluate student achievement regularly using multiple assessment methods such as teacher-made tests, samples of student work, mastery skill checklists, criterion-referenced and norm-referenced tests, and online assessment tools.
  • Make appropriate adjustments to the instructional program as required by administration.
  • Respect confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Working knowledge of effective methods for interacting with children.
  • Knowledge of core subjects at the grade level to which employment is assigned.
  • Understanding of the school organization and its community.
  • Knowledge of expected child behavior and developmental characteristics.
  • Skill to operate audiovisual equipment and common office machines.
  • Ability to apply consistent, impartial methods of recognition, rewards, and consequences.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • State of Delaware Certificate and Licensure.
