Application Procedures

  • Holds a high‑school transcript or equivalency and one of the following:
    • An associate degree or higher with a GPA of 2.0 or higher from an accredited institution
    • Sixty college credits from an accredited institution
    • A score of 459 or higher on the Para Pro Test
  • Strong communication skills; writing and speaking in English
  • Strong communication skills; writing and speaking in a second language if required by assignment
  • Experience working with children in varied settings – preferred
  • Working knowledge of behavior‑management procedures – preferred
  • Knowledge of software applications including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint – preferred
  • Knowledge of assistive technology and accommodations for special education students – preferred
  • Ability to assist with self‑help training (student transfer, toileting, diapering, grooming, feeding, etc.) if required by assignment
  • Ability to pass Safety Techniques and Personal Restraint assessments if required by assignment
  • Ability to pass CPR and First Aid training if required by assignment
  • Must be able to stand and work continuously for a minimum of 4 hours per work day
  • Minimum lifting requirement – 50 pounds (with assistance)
  • Must be able to use arms and hands without restrictions to meet students’ physical, mobility, and ambulatory needs
Special Education & Special Program Qualifications

Instructional paraprofessionals in a special education program setting must have the willingness to accept and carry out the following:

  • Work directly with students under teacher guidance and provide coaching and modeling for active student involvement
  • Assist with instruction and support self‑help skills such as student transfer, toileting, diapering, grooming, feeding, etc.
  • Understand and implement students’ IEP goals and accommodations, including Behavior Support Plans
Responsibilities
  • Ensure the safety of students within all school and community environments
  • Ensure student confidentiality
  • Collaborate with the teacher, paraprofessionals, and related services providers on implementing students’ plans and activities
  • Work with students individually, in small groups, or whole groups as directed by the teacher, in school and/or community settings
  • Assist in ongoing monitoring of students’ progress, including assessment, data collection, and computer work
  • Support discipline of students using behavior management plans as directed by the classroom teacher
  • Maintain dignity and respect for each student at all times
  • May assist with supervision and monitoring of social interactions during non‑instructional activities such as bus duty, breakfast/lunch, recess, student transitions, specials/electives, and field trips
