Finish Technician, CIM
The Finish Technician, CIM prepares surfaces for finishing, including sanding, grinding, and surface treatment, and applies various finishes, such as paint, stain, and lacquer. This position is responsible for analyzing work orders to determine and select the appropriate materials.
Essential Functions

Evaluate work orders to establish paint and finishing materials required to complete specified job. If any materials are not in stock, they must be ordered.
Verify products pulled and stationed at prep table match the specifications of the work order. At this point the products can begin the prep process that includes but not limited to; sanding, grinding, dusting and removal of stickers, labels, lock cores and grommets.
Paint Prep/Finishing:
- Mixes finish ingredients to obtain desired colors or shades.
- Brushes, sprays, or hand-rubs finishing ingredients, such as paint, oil, stain, or wax, onto and into wood grain, and applies lacquer or other sealers.
- Smooths, shapes, and touches up surfaces to prepare them for finishing, using sandpaper, pumice stones, steel wool, chisels, sanders, or grinders.
- Selects appropriate finishing ingredients such as paint, stain, lacquer, shellac, or varnish, depending on factors, such as wood hardness and surface type.
- Fills and smooths cracks or depressions, removes marks and imperfections, and repairs broken parts, using plastic or wood putty, glue, nails, or screws.
- Distresses surfaces with woodworking tools or abrasives before staining to create an antique appearance, or rub surfaces to bring out highlights and shadings.
- Examines furniture to determine the extent of damage or deterioration, and to decide on the best method for repair or restoration.
- Paints metal surfaces electrostatically, or by using a spray gun or other painting equipment.
- Recommends woods, colors, finishes, and furniture styles, using knowledge of wood products, fashions, and styles.
- Removes old finishes and damaged or deteriorated parts, using hand tools, stripping tools, sandpaper, steel wool, abrasives, solvents, or dip baths.
Wood Finishing:
- Prepares surfaces for finishing using necessary power/hand tools
- Selects appropriate finish, depending on factors present
- Matches stains and finishes to obtain desired shades
- Applies finishes by brush, sprayer or by hand
- Matches stains and finishes to custom colors
- Corrects imperfections and completes repairs
- Distresses surfaces utilizing tools and abrasives
- Removes old finishes using the proper technique for desired result
- Performs quality checks according to quality standards
- Maintains basic preventive maintenance on spray booths and equipment
- Keeps work area neat and clean according to company standards
- Works safely and follows all company rules and procedures
Requirements
- High School Diploma /GED.
- Must have at least 5+ years' experience in a shop environment and painting/finishing experience.
- Must have technical skills to proficiently run shop equipment like table saw, routers, and skill saw.
- Detail-oriented and capable of working on multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Dependable with a positive attitude & commitment for success.
- Effective communication skills, as well as excellent attendance and work principles.
