Employment Class: Non‑exempt / hourly
The Flat Rate Technician (Tech) lives VIP’s mission to earn automotive customers for life by learning and living the VIP culture and following VIP processes to ensure customers receive a better experience. The Tech works effectively and safely, communicates well, and executes automotive diagnosis, repair, and replacement services with quality and first‑time compliance. The Tech must comply with safety, loss prevention, and customer service programs, and all applicable municipal, state, and federal regulations.
Duties & Responsibilities- Prioritize workplace safety; follow all safety policies, complete safety training, lock out unsafe equipment, report unsafe conditions or actions to Management.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain automotive systems (ASE‑certified systems) including transmission, driveline, brakes, electrical, HVAC, engine performance, and other covered systems.
- Ensure a valid Service Work Order is initiated and visible on the vehicle before work begins.
- Complete MPI prior to service and participate in the 5‑for‑5 Customer Engagement Process.
- Return completed Service Work Order and required printouts to the Service Desk with vehicle keys.
- Order parts only from approved Desk Team members and return unused parts after service.
- Return cores, batteries, and used tires to designated security areas.
- Maintain a minimum 16‑week average productivity targeted per position.
- Perform quality, safety, and housekeeping duties: road test vehicles, secure and lock vehicles, install seat and steering wheel covers, keep work area clean, maintain shop equipment, use protective eyewear, and follow loss‑prevention program.
- Support a continually updated ASE certification status and necessary training (LMS, safe equipment, state inspector, T.I.A., TPMS).
- Assist with administrative duties such as authorizing time worked, reviewing attendance records, and entering facility/equipment issues into the database.
- Comply with safety and environmental codes, disposal regulations, and the service Code of Ethics.
- Maintain minimum 50% productivity (Billed Hours / Worked Hours) and minimal come‑backs.
- One year of related automotive service experience.
- Completion of a two‑year college or technical program is recommended.
- Current, valid driver's license issued in state of residence.
- ASE Certification G1 recommended; ASE A4 and A5 required; additional ASE or Master Technician certifications as applicable.
- Ability to read, interpret technical instructions, explain vehicle information to customers, diagnose automotive problems, and apply written and verbal instructions.
- Proficiency in using automotive tools, repair equipment, and shop computer systems.
- Strong communication skills, teamwork, and customer service orientation.
Work performed in an indoor service department exposed to weather changes, mechanical equipment, chemicals, and noise up to 110 decibels. Protective eyewear required at all times.
