School Counselor Position

Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Services, the School Counselor implements a comprehensive school counseling program that supports students' academic achievement, career development, and social/emotional well-being. The School Counselor works to remove barriers to learning and ensure access to robust learning opportunities. Assists students in identifying their academic interests to support goals for their future. Evaluates students' abilities and interests through review of relevant student data and interviews to help them develop academic and career goals.

Collaborates with teachers and families to help students develop skills that support learning and long-term academic success, including topics such as effective time management and study habits. Analyzes data to identify issues like absenteeism or behavioral problems that may be impacting a student's academic performance. Provides individual and group counseling to help students manage personal, social, and academic concerns as well as support students' academic, career, and social development.

Delivers whole-class lessons on appropriate counseling curriculum aligned with national counseling standards, including topics such as stress management, bullying prevention, or career exploration. Helps students develop social skills, manage emotions, and resolve conflicts. When necessary, counselors refer students to mental health professionals for further support. Implement school-wide prevention programs (drug/alcohol prevention, bullying, etc). Helps students explore extended learning options, complete program applications, and find scholarship/grant funding when appropriate.

Provides students with information about various career paths and helps them develop plans for their future. Maintains confidential student records and works with other school personnel to ensure student information is accurate and up-to-date. Works with teachers, administrators, and community organizations to create a supportive learning environment for students. Works closely with the 504 team, which typically includes teachers, administrators, and special education staff, to determine eligibility, develop accommodations, and ensure implementation of 504 plans.

Advocates for students' well-being and academic success, often participating in IEP meetings and other student-focused events. Designs, implements, and assesses the effectiveness of the school's counseling program and makes recommendations for improvement. Assists in the scheduling of classes. Assists with the registration and orientation of students who are new to the school regarding procedures and educational opportunities. Additional duties perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
