Job DescriptionUnder the direction of the classroom teacher, the Behavior Assistant provides one‑to‑one support to a student with behavioral issues. The Assistant implements comprehensive positive behavioral support plans, effective behavior management strategies, delivers instructions, participates as a member of the educational team, and helps design and implement all components of the student’s individual program.
Responsibilities- Assist the classroom teacher in all aspects of classroom instruction and behavior support.
- Implement Behavior Strategic Plan/Behavior Intervention Plan.
- Implement behavior strategies.
- Support students throughout the school day including recess and lunch.
- Supervise students in classrooms, during educational activities, and during recess and lunch.
- Consult and collaborate with site staff.
- Assist in student assessments as appropriate.
- Participate in IEP meetings as appropriate.
- Maintain appropriate documentation, records, and reports.
- Participate in developing data collection systems, and monitor data collection to ensure the success of the behavior plan.
- Certification in the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) in non‑violent crisis interventions is desired.
- First Aid and CPR training required (training available through the district).
- Basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics, particularly pertaining to pupils with special learning needs.
- Behavior management strategies and techniques relating to pupils experiencing behavioral difficulties.
- Positive behavioral interventions and applied behavior analysis.
- Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
- Basic mathematical concepts.
- Routine record storage, retrieval, and management procedures.
- Work with students having special needs and/or aggressive behaviors (e.g., biting, kicking, hitting, emotional outburst).
- Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups and disabilities.
- Appropriately manage student behavior and guide student toward more acceptable social behaviors.
- Implement positive behavior support plans.
- Model appropriate behavioral interventions.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office‑related machines and equipment.
- Utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures to enhance training and educational environment.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.
- Work with staff in developing data collection systems, and monitor data collection to ensure the success of the behavior plan.
- Any combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described.
- Experience working in an educational setting implementing intensive behavioral intervention programs for students with complex and/or severe behavioral problems.
- High School/Trade School degree preferred.
- 6.5 hour per school‑day position, qualifying for district‑sponsored benefits including health insurance, fully paid dental, life and long‑term disability, sick time, and personal time.
- Position for 184 days, including 178 school days, 1 workshop day before school begins, 1 workshop day as assigned by the district, and 4 paid holidays.
