Specialist Biomedical Scientist (predominant nights)

This post is based at Epsom General Hospital Clinical Blood Sciences Laboratory (CBS). However, you may be expected to work at any of the SWLP sites as and when required.

This is a predominantly night shift role
suited for motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a minimum of 24 months post-registration experience working in a busy multi-disciplinary department covering Blood transfusion, haematology and biochemistry.

You will be required to commit to working a minimum of 7 night shifts per month and a minimum of 8 weekday shifts per month, although this may be subject to change as the service requires. Successful candidates will be supported to undertake various CPD activities to include both in-house/external programmes as well as post-graduate study programmes.

Experience with Beckman Coulter equipment is essential for the haematology and biochemistry lab and Immucor (Werfen) for the blood transfusion lab.

Main duties of the job
  • Predominantly night shift worker in blood transfusion, haematology & biochemistry departments
  • Maintenance and routine operation of Beckman Coulter equipment (AU5812, DxI
    9000 and DxA
    5000, DxH
    900) and Immucor Neo Iris.
  • Technical validation and escalation (where required) of test results during the out of hours shift.
  • Prioritization of urgent samples to ensure test results are reported in a timely manner.
  • Supervision of biomedical support staff working in the main pathology reception during the night shift.
  • Ensuring your mandatory and statutory training (MAST) is always up to date.
  • Maintain CPD record to comply with HCPC registration requirements.
  • Competences in Telepath LIMS and Blood track.

South West London Pathology (SWLP) is an NHS partnership providing a highly dependable, clinically assured and cost effective diagnostic pathology service. SWLP is a pathology partnership between Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which provides a single, integrated pathology service for hospitals and GPs across South West London and beyond.

Epsom General Hospital Laboratory operates a 24hr shift system providing cover to a busy A&E and acute services. The Biochemistry Laboratory is equipped with Beckman DxC
700AU
, DxI 9000. Haematology is equipped with ACL Top 370, Beckman Coulter DxH 900 with Auto Mate for pre/post analytics, Alifax ESR analysers, as well as Immucor IRIS for automated Blood Transfusion services.

The Epsom General Hospital CBS Laboratory is UKAS accredited and has IBMS approval for training Biomedical Scientists to registration and specialist BMS level.

Person Specification Qualifications and Training
  • An honours degree or equivalent in a biological science
  • HCPC Registration
  • Hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline or equivalent experience
Knowledge and Experience
  • Proven experience post HCPC registration in the relevant discipline
  • Excellent working knowledge of specialist subject in relevant disciplines
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Knowledge of health and safety issues Experience of quality management systems
  • Experience with Beckman Coulter and Immucor analysers
