Qualifications- Must be currently licensed by the State of New Hampshire as a Registered Nurse and certified by the State Board of Education.
- Must be currently certified in CPR and First Aid.
- at least a Bachelor degree in Nursing or willing/able to obtain BSN within 6 years of hire
- 3+ years of school nursing experience or equivalent
- Good organizational and technical skills including effective use of various hardware and software applications
- Thorough knowledge of medical record keeping and filing techniques
- Demonstrated ability to:
- maintain a high level of confidentiality
- work independently under supervision
- comprehend, interpret, reports, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information
- communicate and interact effectively with others
- assemble information in a concise manner
The Nurse will promote and maintain the health of school children through care, prevention, education, and counseling and have responsibilities in the following areas:
- Administrative
- Health Services
- Health Education
- Professionalism
- Maintains all licenses and certifications, and submits proof of renewal to the Supervisor
- Assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, management and referral activities for students in the school district.
- Provides for the promotion and maintenance of health as well as the prevention of illness and injuries. This facilitates the removal of health-related barriers to learning and promotes promoting an optimal level of wellness for students and staff.
- Responsible for direct and indirect care given to students in compliance with professional standards of practice, licensed health care provider orders, Individual Health Care Plans and with school district policies.
- Functions in accordance with the New Hampshire Nurse Practice Act and Rules and Regulations, NH State Department of Education Rules and Regulations and the school district's policies and procedures.
- Collaborates with a wide variety of school system district and professional disciplines to enhance the educational process and the promotion of an optimal level of wellness for students.
- The School Nurse clinically functions independently, and is self-directed
- Organizes, administers and manages school health services.
- Direct supervision of licensed practical nurse or licensed nursing assistant working in the school system.
- Assists in the preparation and implementation of the school health services budget, and maintains an inventory of needed supplies in the health office.
- Ensures the maintenance of accurate health records for all children and the submission of all reports relating to the health of children to the State or other appropriate agencies.
- Serves on school and/or District Wellness Team and assists with related policy development.
- Collaborates as a member on a school-wide team to help identify students at risk for physical and psychosocial problems.
- Recommends changes for safety hazards and sanitary conditions in the school environment.
- Coordination and participation in the establishment, review and implementation of District school health services policies and procedures.
- Provides professional expertise in emergency management planning.
- Provides leadership in the planning of proper emergency care and first aid for sudden illnesses and accidents incurred during school activities.
- Responsible for the formulation, revision and implementation of the Individual Health Care Plan.
- Coordinates the health screenings on an as needed basis. Interprets the health screening results to parents and teachers, and assists in the follow-up and referral of children.
- Acts as a liaison between the family, school, health care professionals and community to improve the holistic health needs of students.
- Participates as the health expert on Individualized Education Plan and 504 teams.
- Serves as a health consultant and resource person for the health education in the classroom.
- May assist in the coordination of the Health Curriculum.
- Uses opportunities provided by illness and/or injury to teach principles of personal safety, modes of transmissions of communicable diseases, signs and symptoms of illness, personal hygiene, prevention of disease and first aid.
- Assists students, families and school personnel to achieve optimal levels of wellness through health services and health education.
