Position: RESEARCH SCIENTIST - Magnetospheric Multiscale - Durham, NH
Location: Durham

Who We Are:

The SwRI Department of Earth, Oceans, and Space (located on the University of New Hampshire campus in the seacoast town of Durham, NH) offers exciting aerospace engineering opportunities. We offer a unique collaborative environment involving scientists and engineers at both SwRI and UNH. We design and fabricate spaceflight hardware, including new instrumentation and custom‑designed avionics. Active programs include science missions (funded by NASA and NOAA) in space weather, heliophysics, astrophysics, and Earth science, as well as commercial spaceflight programs.

Objectives

of this Role:
  • Conduct research in space plasma and magnetospheric physics using data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission.
  • Submit proposals for external (e.g., NASA, NSF) and internal (SwRI IR) funding for research and hardware development projects.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Analyze data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission.
  • Publish first‑authored journal articles on findings from MMS data analysis.
  • Assist with MMS‑focused research led by SwRI‑EOS team members, leading to and assisting with the publication of co‑authored publications.
  • Prepare and present research findings at conferences.
  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities beyond MMS, e.g., through NASA‑ROSES and NSF programs.
Requirements:
  • Requires a PhD in Physics with thesis on magnetospheric physics or affiliated space physics topics.
  • Must be proficient in IDL, MATLAB, and/or Python.
  • Experience in publishing articles in peer‑reviewed scientific journals.
  • A valid/clear driver’s license is required.
Special Requirements :

Work assignment is in Durham, New Hampshire. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
