Job SummaryThe State of New Hampshire is hiring full‑time Bridge Maintainers at levels I–III to support bridge construction, repair, and maintenance. The position requires varying levels of skill and experience with heavy equipment and has a progressive career path.
Salary$15.93 – $26.41 per hour (depending on level)
Bridge Maintainer ISummary: Perform semi‑skilled bridge construction work, assisting other bridge maintainers on maintenance, repairs, and construction activities.

Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) meeting minimum standards

Career AdvancementEligible for promotion to Level III (criteria BGA
01).
- Perform masonry, carpentry, welding, wood and steel fabrication, structural steel placement, and steel reinforcement.
- Assist with work‑zone traffic control, wetland protection, safety and security inspections, and assembly/installation of temporary bridges such as Bailey Bridges.
- Support rigging, scaffolding, and staging for lifting materials.
- Apply work‑zone safety, health, personnel, and hazardous material procedures and wear PPE.
- Work in hazardous environments (high‑speed traffic, night, heights, inclement weather, etc.) ensuring traveler safety.
- Operate heavy pneumatic tools and climb scaffolds.
- Comply with all risk‑management, safety, and environmental standards.
Summary: Perform semi‑skilled and skilled bridge construction work, assisting other maintainers on maintenance, repairs, and construction activities.
Minimum Qualifications- Education/
Experience:
One year of education and experience after high school. - License/Certification:
Valid driver’s license. - Other Requirements: MVR meeting minimum standards, negative pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen.
- Experience in bridge construction, carpentry, concrete, structural welding, steel erection or painting, timber construction, or heavy equipment operation.
- Obtain a valid CDL‑B with tank and air‑brake endorsements within one year.
Eligible for promotion to Level IV (criteria BGA
01).
- Perform masonry, carpentry, welding, wood and steel fabrication, structural steel placement, reinforcement, and safety inspections.
- Operate and maintain heavy bridge construction equipment and machines.
- Apply knowledge of traffic control, wetland protection, temporary bridge assembly, and movable span maintenance.
- Assist with rigging, scaffolding, and staging for lifting.
- Teach and supervise Bridge Maintainer I and Laborer positions.
- Work continuously in hazardous environments while adhering to safety and environmental standards.
- Operate heavy pneumatic tools, climb scaffolds, and handle heavy materials.
Summary: Perform skilled bridge construction and maintenance duties, supervise other maintainers, and act as crew supervisor in absence of the Bridge Construction Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications- Education/
Experience:
Three years of education and experience after high school in carpentry, concrete, structural welding, steel erection or painting, timber construction, or heavy equipment operation, with at least one year as a Bridge Maintainer II. - License/Certification:
Valid CDL‑A or CDL‑B with tank and air‑brake endorsements. - Other Requirements: MVR meeting standards, negative pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen.
Obtain a valid CDL‑A with tank and air‑brake endorsements within one year.
Career AdvancementEligible for promotion to Level V.
