Location: Boscawen
Cemetery Equipment Operator and Maintenance Worker – New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH
Salary: $19.96 to $26.41 per hour ($19.23 per hour for trainee). 40‑hour basic week.
Summary: Operates heavy equipment for burial and groundskeeping operations, and performs skilled building and vehicle maintenance, landscaping, snow removal, and maintenance of cemetery facilities to honor veterans and families.
Minimum Qualifications- Equivalent combination of 3 years of education and experience after high school in maintenance, building trades, landscaping, operating heavy equipment, automotive repair, or a related field.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Successful completion of a State Police records check.
- Physical ability to lift up to 100 lbs, bend, climb stairs/ladders, dig with a handheld shovel, and maintain normal strength and agility.
- Willingness to report to the job site or be on standby during emergency situations such as snow or inclement weather. Must be available for after‑hours snow removal operations.
- Knowledge of principles of cemetery operations and maintenance.
- Familiarity with National Cemetery Administration inspection standards.
- Experience interacting with veterans and their families.
- Consideration given to qualified eligible veterans.
- Operate, maintain, and repair heavy and light equipment, including excavator, backhoe, dump truck, loader, skid‑steer, riding lawn mower, string‑trimmer, and related tools.
- Repair, maintain, and install parts and systems on electrical, plumbing, heating and air‑conditioning, irrigation, mechanical assemblies, and door security devices.
- Coordinate with administrative staff to ensure dignified and accurate placement of remains, marking each placement with an upright granite headstone or bronze niche marker while maintaining precision.
- Develop and execute daily, weekly, monthly, and annual plans for care and cleaning of grounds, roads, trees, gardens, buildings, and equipment.
- Perform regular maintenance, repairs, and cleaning to keep equipment and vehicles in excellent operating condition.
- Conduct carpentry, woodworking, metal work, painting, cleaning, and other maintenance on over 50 structures at the cemetery.
- Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, job orders, and technical manuals for construction, repair, and upkeep projects.
- Repair, install, and repoint brick, concrete, and stone structures and appurtenances.
- Perform snow and ice removal and surface treatment operations using snowsweepers, plow trucks, front loaders, and snow blowers.
- Co‑ordinate and communicate with guests to provide instructions and ensure visitor safety during burial and event operations.
- Act in the absence of the Cemetery Buildings and Grounds Superintendent, including ordering and receiving repair parts and supplies.
