Crossing Guard

Pay Rate: $25.00 per hour

• Morning Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:45 AM (minimum 1 hour of pay)
• Afternoon Shift: 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM (minimum 1 hour of pay)

The Town of Amherst, in partnership with SAU 39, is seeking dependable and safety-conscious individuals to serve as Crossing Guards. This part-time role plays a vital part in ensuring the safety of children crossing the street near Wilkins Elementary School. Crossing Guards manage pedestrian and vehicle traffic during designated school hours. Training will be provided.

• Safely escort children and pedestrians across designated crosswalks.
• Direct or stop traffic using hand signals or approved electronic devices.
• Maintain awareness of surroundings, including traffic flow, weather, and pedestrian movement.
• Report traffic violations and unsafe conditions to a supervisor in writing.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully, especially with children.
• Ability to stand outdoors for up to an hour per shift and remain alert.
• Good judgment and ability to make quick decisions in traffic situations.
• Familiarity with traffic regulations related to pedestrian crossings.
• Ability to use traffic control devices and hand signals.
• Professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with the public.

• Must be able to hear and see within a normal range (with or without accommodations).
• Able to stand, walk briskly, bend, squat, and step up/down curbs.
• Willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license or state-issued .
• No prior experience required—training will be provided.
