Overview

The Assistant Director will report to the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs at the Yale Divinity School (YDS). The position supports daily operations of the dean’s office.

The successful candidate will share a vested interest in supporting academic administration and the needs of faculty and senior leaders.

Responsibilities include:
  • Stays abreast of research and trends in higher education and brings an understanding of ecumenical spaces, theological landscapes as well as interfaith and other traditions and practices.
  • Exhibits a demonstrated commitment to skills and abilities in to implementing initiatives for the School’s faculty and administration.
  • Supports the office presence on Yale Connect, the online campus engagement system.
  • Interacts regularly with the Dean’s Office to promote the success of all programs and processes.
  • Contributes to program ideas for faculty on-boarding and support.
  • Undertakes research or specific projects as assigned.
  • Develops ideas to increase the office’s impact.
Administrative Support responsibilities include:
  • Serves as manager or assistant for events and programs.
  • Assists in organizing large-scale events (e.g., talks by notable visitors) and accompanies the Associate Dean to events as needed.
  • Collaborates with the Communications Office to contribute to approved social media platforms.
  • Conducts surveys and hosts focus groups as directed by the Associate Dean for DEIB.
  • Provides administrative support to the Senior Associate Dean including but not limited to correspondences to community partners, consolidating monthly expenses, data input, scheduling meetings, preparing letters, preparing minutes for relevant meetings etc.
  • Provides back-up support for the administration of the office.
Required

Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to communicate effectively (written, interpersonal, group communication) at all levels of the school (administration, faculty, staff, students) and external constituents. High emotional intelligence and ability to handle stressful, challenging, and emotional situations, and create thoughtful, fair, and institutionally aligned responses.

2. Ability to work with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, other university constituents, and external organizations.

3. Proven excellent organizational, planning, event management, public speaking, and leadership skills. Adaptability, including being comfortable with ambiguity and change. Capable of representing YSD in multiple contexts. Experienced and confident using a variety of technology platforms.

4. Demonstrated ability to create and sustain an environment of mutual respect, while continually learning about differences in our community members to support responsible, humane, and inclusive work and learning environments for faculty, staff and students. Team-oriented including exercising discretion in holding confidential information.

Preferred

Education and Experience

1. Advanced degree or significant experience in relevant fields (Education, Religion, Theology) and experience working with diverse groups of people.

2. Experience with program management and a strong sense of project ownership, including confidence in managing plans through to completion.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Manages and leads research on various federal rules and regulations as well as University policies and procedures to resolve problems and determine the best course of action for the functional area.
  • Recommends course of action to higher authority for the handling and disposition of problems related to the functional area.
  • Counsels faculty, students and staff on issues related to administrative operations of the University function and areas of concern for the function.
