Overview

Provides high-level administrative and editorial support for two editors including soliciting peer reviews for proposals and manuscripts and endorsements for marketing and promotional purposes; drafting memos, budgets, and other materials for internal and external editorial and marketing meetings; working closely with authors to prepare manuscripts and accompanying materials for editing and production, and maintaining spreadsheets, files, and databases. Collaborates closely with editors to prioritize tasks and workflow.

Participates in hiring and training of academic year and summer interns. May be asked to help represent the Press at academic conferences.

Required

Skills and Abilities

1. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including note taking abilities and proofreading skills, as well as organizational skills, including the ability to maintain thorough and accurate records with minimal supervision.

2. Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with colleagues, faculty, authors, and publishing industry professionals with responsiveness, courtesy, tact, and discretion.

3. Curiosity, proactivity, and engagement; demonstrated ability to anticipate and plan ahead to meet deadlines, seeking guidance as needed; to own and complete daily and seasonal tasks independently and efficiently; and to be accountable for completed work.

4. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Software.

5. An understanding of the value of diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Guides authors in manuscript revision and preparation for submission.
2. Guides authors in preparation of art for reproduction.
3. Prepares contract abstracts.
4. Prepares manuscripts for release to the manuscript editing department.
5. Independently researches, selects, and contacts readers for manuscripts and maintain reader log. Process honorariums.
6. Drafts memos for the Acquisitions Panel and the Publications Committee.
7. Prepares Title Information Sheets and other marketing/sales materials.
8. Prepares and proofreads jacket copy.
9. Secures promotional blurbs when requested. 10. Assists with preparation of grant applications. 11. Prepares workshop logs for design/production. 12. Assists in tracking project expenditures and maintaining cost sheets. 13. Undertakes and/or oversees image permissions work as required. 14. Prepares, edits, and proofreads correspondence; articulates complex and sensitive information in a convincing, coherent, and efficient way. 15. Creates and maintains book files.

16. Assists Publisher and/or Managing Editor as required. 17. Organizes and coordinates mailing of complimentary copies of new books. 18. Oversees student interns. 19. Monitors receipt of proposals and manuscripts. Prepares rejection letters. 20. Attends production, launch, and other regular in-house meetings. 21. Attends occasional academic conferences and exhibits. 22. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required

Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
