Role DescriptionLaydon Industries is seeking an experienced Senior Construction Project Manager to lead multiple heavy civil, underground utility, roadway, and municipal construction projects from contract award through final payment and closeout.
This is a full‑time position based in our New Haven office, with regular travel to project sites throughout Connecticut. The Senior Project Manager reports directly to the President and supervises and mentors Jr. associates.
Primary Responsibilities- Manage multiple construction projects from award through completion and closeout.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for owners, municipalities, CTDOT, public agencies, engineers, construction managers, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Lead biweekly project progress meetings, distribute meeting information, and follow up on outstanding action items.
- Coordinate regularly with the General Superintendent and project superintendents regarding crew schedules, project sequencing, labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and changing field conditions.
- Develop and maintain project schedules, near‑term work plans, milestones, and resource forecasts.
- Monitor project budgets, committed costs, labor and equipment performance, installed quantities, production, cash flow, and anticipated cost to complete.
- Prepare and manage payment requisitions, quantity backup, cost‑plus documentation, billing support, and collection follow‑up.
- Manage project documentation, including RFIs, submittals, purchase orders, change orders, notices, claims, proposals, and contract correspondence.
- Identify, document, price, negotiate, and track extra work, changed conditions, and disputed quantities.
- Develop subcontractor scopes, coordinate procurement and deliveries, and monitor subcontractor performance.
- Maintain required public‑project documentation, including certified payrolls, insurance certificates, bonds, compliance reporting, and agency‑specific requirements.
- Coordinate with surveyors, utilities, designers, inspectors, and other project stakeholders.
- Lead punch‑list completion, final documentation, and project closeout.
- Supervise and develop project engineers.
- Provide selective estimating and preconstruction support in coordination with the Chief Estimator.
- At least eight years of progressive construction experience, including a minimum of five years independently managing heavy civil, roadway, underground utility, or public works projects.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and coordinate effectively with field operations.
- Experience with project financial controls, monthly billing, quantities, forecasting, subcontract administration, change orders, and claims.
- Strong knowledge of construction plans, specifications, contracts, schedules, and heavy civil construction methods.
- Experience with Connecticut municipal, CTDOT, or public utility contracts is strongly preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and the ability to learn construction project management systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred. Comparable heavy civil construction experience will also be considered.
- PMP or PE certification is helpful but not required.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly to Connecticut project sites.
