Overview

The staff hospitalist must be able to competently care for the hospitalized patient throughout the hospital stay. This includes emergency evaluation and triage in addition to admission to the hospital and formation of a differential diagnosis. It is essential to formulate a comprehensive care plan in accordance with the most up to date, evidence based protocols. The staff hospitalist must possess excellent communication skills and exhibit these through communication with primary medical doctors as well as in house consultant physicians and colleagues.

The hospitalist must interact in a professional manner with all members of the patient care team. The hospitalist physician should participate in education of the house staff physicians, students, nurses and all members of the patient care team. The hospitalist should keep high quality care and patient safety in mind while transitioning the patient back to the outpatient setting upon discharge.

The hospitalist shall deliver the above with service excellence and patient satisfaction in mind. Participation on Hospital committees service is encouraged in an effort to demonstrate leadership.

Responsibilities
  • Examines patients, obtains medical histories and treats acute and chronic illnesses
  • Orders, performs and interprets diagnostic tests
  • Involves patients and their families in care and treatment decisions
  • Creates treatment plans and completes orders in patient's charts
  • Collaborates on improvements in care delivery and service with staff, other physicians and management
  • Initiates appropriate specialty referrals
  • Provides clinical information to the interdisciplinary team in a clear and timely manner
  • Ensures that proper patient documentation is timely, accurate and complete
  • Works with practice management to ensure proper compliance with billing, coding and CPT code assignment
  • Achieves and maintains optimal patient access
  • Provides interdepartmental medical consultation as requested
  • Participates in the development of medical protocols, standard procedures and management of patient-care-related activities
  • Provides on-call coverage
  • Gives feedback to and accepts feedback from all staff in respectful manner
  • Acts in a positive and professional manner, complying with practice policies, procedures and federal and state laws
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Promotes health education in conjunction with other health professionals
  • Efficiently uses group practice and healthcare resources
  • Contributes to quality improvement activities by actively participating in the medical staff activities, serving on various committees and suggesting and supporting process improvements
  • Advises the Chief Medical Officer of any problems that can affect the efficiency of the organization
  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION (number of years and type required to perform the position duties):
    Degree of MD or DO with ABIM-recognized internal medicine residency (three years minimum) or ABFM-recognized family medicine residency (three years minimum)
    EXPERIENCE (number of years and type required to meet an acceptable level of performance):
    Preferred:
    Professional clinical experience in primary care practice, either family medicine or internal medicine
