Overview
The New Haven Free Public Library fosters lifelong learning, inspires curiosity, and builds community through shared access to resources, experiences, and opportunities for all. This part‑time position in the Technical Services / Cataloging Department is an entry‑level opportunity for current librarians seeking additional experience or Library Science students within one semester of completing their coursework.
Responsibilities- Catalog books, periodicals, public documents, pamphlets, AV materials, and other items using an automated system and bibliographic utilities; perform original and copy cataloging; assign subject headings; review preprocessed items for accuracy; supervise the processing of materials.
- Select or aid in selecting print and non‑print materials subject to review by a higher‑level librarian.
- Conduct research and instruct patrons in the use of reference tools and databases, and prepare bibliographies.
- Provide guidance to parents, teachers, and patrons of all ages concerning appropriate reading material.
- Assist patrons with the use of computers, applications, and the Internet; conduct library tours for school and civic groups.
- Lead programs such as book talks, story hours, and specialized information presentations.
- Develop and maintain relationships with schools and other organizations to promote library services.
- Supervise the work of support personnel; may supervise a branch or department in the absence of a regular supervisor.
- Perform related work as required.
- M.S. in Library Science from an ALA‑accredited graduate program.
- Experience with cataloging and Integrated Library System (ILS) operations, including original and copy cataloging for all material types, data loading, and authority file maintenance.
- Knowledge of library science principles and practices, library procedures and techniques, and reference and bibliographic research methods.
- Proficiency with library software and database searching; computer literacy including PowerPoint, spreadsheets, and word processing.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to troubleshoot computer and equipment problems.
- Capacity to plan and implement library programs and to work harmoniously with users and staff.
- Spanish/English bilingualism is encouraged to serve the diverse community.
General Fund, “Non‑Tested” position. 19 hours per week with possible evenings and weekends. Library Science students within one semester of completing coursework are paid $18 per hour, increasing to $21 per hour upon completion of the MLIS degree. The part‑time position does not qualify for medical benefits, vacation pay, holiday pay, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Employment is contingent upon a background check and drug screening.
Special Requirements- M.S. in Library Science from an ALA‑accredited graduate program.
