Lower School Chinese Teacher

The Foote School is seeking a temporary full-time Lower School Chinese Teacher (grades 1-5) beginning August 26, 2026. This is a temporary leave replacement expected to last at least one month, with the possibility of extension depending on the returning employee’s needs.
The Foote School is an independent K–9 all-gender day school in New Haven, Connecticut. We believe children learn best when meaningful challenge is balanced with time to be children, so our days combine experiential learning, thoughtful inquiry, and space to grow.

Language study plays a key role in the Foote School experience, building students' facility with speaking, listening, reading, and writing the language, as well as expanding their appreciation of Chinese culture.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:- Design and deliver high-quality, engaging, and developmentally appropriate instruction that meets the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students
- Differentiate instruction to support individual student needs
- Assess student progress and complete reports
- Communicate regularly with parents and lead conferences
- Work collaboratively as a member of the World Language Department and grade-level colleagues to align curriculum across grade levels
- Assist in Admissions efforts
- Participate meaningfully in school life beyond the classroom, including committee work, school events, and assigned duties (e.g., dismissal and greeting, advising, or recess coverage), contributing to a positive and collaborative school culture
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree required;
Master's Degree in Chinese and/or education strongly preferred - Proficiency with standard Mandarin Chinese, both spoken and written, including simplified characters and pinyin, with priority given to native or heritage speakers
- Effective oral and written communication in English
- Experience teaching language instruction to students, preferably grades K-9
- Training in best practices as it relates to modern language pedagogy
- Experience with project-based and hands-on learning
- Demonstrated experience in differentiating instruction
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Proficient at designing and using assessments to guide instruction
- Demonstrated commitment to professional learning and innovation
- Commitment to best practice as it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a temporary, full-time, salaried exempt position. The school year hours are Monday
- Friday, 8:00 a.m.
- 4:00 p.m., with summers and school holidays off.
