The Director of Learner Assessment is a member of the leadership team in the Center for Medical Education and works closely with other leaders in the Center and curriculum leaders in undergraduate and graduate medical education. The Director of Learner Assessment is a core member of the teams responsible for student assessment in both the MD and PA programs, providing advanced expertise in the design, implementation and evaluation of high-quality formative and summative assessment across the medical education continuum.

The Director of Learner Assessment will engage with faculty and curriculum leaders to design, implement, and evaluate strategies and a set of services for the assessment of physician associate and medical students and other learners affiliated with Yale School Of Medicine.

Responsibilities to include:

  • In collaboration with curricular leaders, analyze the performance of formative and summative student assessments including written and practical exams, workplace-based assessments, evaluations of clinical performance, observed structured clinical examinations, and other assessment tools.
  • Participate in learner assessment mapping and support accreditation and continuous quality improvement.
  • Use statistical software and data visualization platforms to analyze data on learner assessment for the purposes of continuous quality improvement and program evaluation.
  • Collaborate with curriculum committees and educational leadership for data-driven curricular improvement related to student assessment.
  • Work with leaders in the Center for Medical Education to develop and implement faculty development programs and other instruction on best practices in learner assessment across the medical education continuum.
  • Monitor external qualitative and quantitative undergraduate medical education learner assessment data (e.g. USMLE Step 1 & 2 scores, OSCE evaluations, AAMC Graduation Questionnaire, etc.) in relation to educational program objectives.

Consult with faculty and program leaders on the design and implementation of assessment instruments to assess multiple facets of learner performance.

Work with curricular leaders to develop and manage assessment strategies aligned with the school's mission and educational program outcomes.

Serve as a member of various education and curricular review committees to provide expertise on learner assessment.

Produce and disseminate scholarly works and attend professional meetings related to learner assessment.

Required

Skills and Abilities

1. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent leadership, collaborative and teamwork skills.

2. Ability to present a statistical analysis of assessment results to a diverse audience.

3. Experience teaching and the ability to design and implement educational sessions on assessment.

4. Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to gain the confidence, respect and trust of colleagues and staff.

5. Ability to facilitate, negotiate and create consensus among diverse stakeholders. Expertise in assessment in medical and health sciences education.

Preferred

Skills and Abilities

1. Doctoral degree with related experience in learner assessment is strongly preferred.

2. Proficiency in statistics and psychometrics.

3. Proficiency with statistical software and data visualization platforms.

4. Experience in planning, designing and implementing a learner assessment plan.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
