Overview

The Yale School of Medicine (YSM) seeks an agile and innovative Assistant Director of Admissions to support us in our mission. This team player shares our enthusiasm for the Yale System of medical education and is eager to convey that enthusiasm with prospective students. The mission of the YSM Office of Admissions is to admit a diverse class of outstanding students who show great promise for becoming leaders in medicine and science.

Reporting to the Director of Admissions and the Associate Dean of Admissions, this position is responsible for pre-screening applicants to YSM. The Assistant Director is also responsible for promoting YSM to prospective students (outreach) and supporting initiatives to engage current applicants (recruitment). Along with other team members, the Assistant Director supports the production of admissions events such as Virtual Interview Days, Second Look admitted student weekend, in-person campus visits, and admissions fairs.

The Assistant Director may assist with other office tasks or special projects. The YSM Office of Admissions is committed primarily to meeting operational needs but is willing to support a flexible work environment as the demands of the admissions schedule change throughout the year. This position allows for a combination of in-person and hybrid works arrangements, with a preference for majority in-person time during peak admission season to best support prospective and current students as well as YSM faculty.

The Assistant Director will enjoy occasional travel throughout the country several times each year.

Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to review and assess a high volume of online applications. Exercise discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance. Strong time management skills and proven ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Excellent analytical skills, and creative self-direction. Exceptional administrative, planning, organizational, and project management skills. Demonstrated excellence in public presentations. Superior writing, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse constituency, including current medical students, faculty, alumni, fellow admissions office staff, pre-medical counselors, and other student affairs staff.
  • Well-developed computer skills, database management, and demonstrated ability to adapt to new software programs.
  • Knowledge of the application and review process for a highly selective academic program.
Preferred

Skills And Abilities
  • Prior experience with mission-aligned and contextual application review at a highly selective college or university admissions office, especially in medical admissions.
  • Comfortable with work travel and possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Preference for Bachelor’s Degree in a science, technology, engineering, math, or related STEM field.
Principal Responsibilities
  • Evaluates all admissions applications, interviews prospective applicants, and independently assesses each application against a variety of factors, including the applicant’s strength, weaknesses and potential contribution to the Yale community. Determines applicant’s standing within local, national and international applicant pools.
    2. Presents applicant recommendations to admissions committee. Briefs admissions committee about applicants and about schools and geographical regions as they relate to evaluation of applicant files. Determines which applicants will be waitlisted
    3. Develops public presentations designed to promote Yale to prospective applicants.
    4. Advises secondary school counselors, applicants and parents on the application process.
    5. Coordinates alumni recruiting activities in assigned geographical areas.
