Literacy Coach

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Elementary Reading and Language Arts, the Literacy Coach ensures students receive high-quality literacy instruction by providing teachers in a school building guidance, leadership, expertise, and professional development through modeling lessons, observations and feedback sessions, data analysis, and more to improve student achievement. The Literacy Coach serves as the literacy content expert and provides support on curriculum, instruction, and assessment working closely with the administration in a school.

The Literacy Coach takes a hands-on approach to improving instruction and effectiveness by working at various levels (classroom, school, district-wide) to directly support instruction, intervention, and English Language Development for all students, including students with disabilities and multilingual learners.

The duties and responsibilities include facilitating professional development communities, overseeing literacy assessments, collecting and analyzing data, communicating with literacy teams, designing and presenting professional development, assisting administrators and teachers in implementing curriculum frameworks, developing and leading professional development, modeling exemplary lessons, developing and supporting reading intervention plans, teaching intervention groups, utilizing educational technology for literacy instruction, and providing professional development and classroom support on lesson design and best practices for literacy.

The department support involves staying current in best literacy practices, collaborating with other elementary reading personnel, participating in literacy programs and curriculum development activities, attending required meetings and training, and completing required paperwork on schedule.

Family support includes conferring with parents, teachers, administrators, and other appropriate staff on all matters related to student achievement in literacy and assisting parents in improving home-school connection in literacy.

Minimum qualifications include five years of successful teaching experience, knowledge of research-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices, knowledge of Common Core and Smarter Balanced Assessment, experience using instructional technology to support teaching and learning, curriculum development, staff training, and program and student accountability, outstanding organizational skills, and strong interpersonal and communication skills as it relates to instructional practice.

Certification/endorsement requirements include valid teaching certification, Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts 1-12(102) required, Reading Consultant Language Arts (097) preferred, or Reading Consultant K-8 (096).

Compensation/benefits/opportunities include local 933, New Haven Federation of Teachers, leadership development opportunities, community support, special federal/state loan forgiveness, and home buyer programs. Salary is contingent on degree and years of experience, ranging from $53,220 to $108,047 for the 26-27 school year.
