The RoleThe District Trainer position supports the training needs within District 3 by preparing, scheduling, and conducting training classes, hands‑on instruction, and refresher training across maintenance facilities, in the field, and at District Headquarters. The role includes the following responsibilities:
- Preparing, scheduling, and delivering classroom and hands‑on training.
- Coordinating equipment for class demonstrations and evaluations, and creating training materials.
- Maintaining training records for employees.
- Performing routine inspections of facilities for regulatory compliance and assisting in District Safety Meetings.
- Collaborating with a Training Officer, district leadership, the Safety Division, and Staff Development to meet OTU and CTDOT objectives.
- Coordinating with external state agencies and vendors to support training initiatives.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement (Class A or B) and a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC); proof required during interview.
- Willingness to accept mandatory emergency overtime (snow and ice removal) from November 1 through April 30 and to stay for storm events as needed.
- Meet the 30‑mile residency requirement from the posted job location.
- Full‑time availability, Monday‑Friday, 7:30 AM‑4:00 PM.
- Current CTDOT employee with at least six months of full‑time service.
- Full‑time (40 hours per week) on‑site in New Haven, CT.
- First shift (7:30 AM – 4:00 PM).

- Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair techniques for roadways, bridges, and airports.
- Proficiency in operating, maintaining, and repairing complex mechanical equipment.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to create and review training materials, including PowerPoint presentations.
- Computer competency with Microsoft Office and One Drive.
- Three (3) years of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, or maintenance/repair of roadways, roadsides, bridges, or airports, including operation and care of mechanical equipment or a recognized maintenance trade.
- One (1) year within the general experience must involve operation of complex equipment or performance of skilled tasks.
- For state employees, this experience equates to a Transportation Maintainer 3.
- Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade can substitute for two (2) years of general experience.
- Experience with public speaking and in‑person training delivery.
- Experience preparing training classes and lesson plans.
- Experience creating and reviewing presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and One Drive.
- Experience prioritizing work to meet time‑sensitive deadlines.
- Experience in highway maintenance and repair of roadways.
Incumbents may need to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications, and must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal whenever required.
Physical and Working Conditions- Must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, vision, and hearing and maintain such fitness.
- Exposure to extreme weather, heavy lifting, dangerous road and traffic conditions, heights, poison ivy, insects, and loud machinery.
- Possible asbestos removal program and use of protective equipment such as respirators and goggles.
