The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is now accepting applications for Transportation Engineer Trainee (Construction Engineering) positions in the Office of Construction, Bureau of Engineering and Construction.

- Locations:
New Haven, Newington, Norwich, Rocky Hill, and Thomaston - Eligible for telework after successful completion of training period in accordance with the Telework Policy
- Position is part of the P‑4 (Engineering, Scientific and Technical) bargaining unit
Applicants must be available for travel, hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license, and provide all required license numbers, expiration dates, and issuing states in the Licenses and Professional Certifications section of the application.
The Role- Problem solve, recommend, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner
- Contribute to providing safe and efficient transportation improvements for the traveling public
- Utilize CAD software (Micro Station) and Microsoft Word/Excel
- Read and analyze or prepare construction plans and estimates
Transportation Engineer Trainee: $72,629 annually. After one year of successful completion of the training program, promotion to Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) with a salary range of $81,047 – $99,673 annually. After two years as a Transportation Engineer 1, promotion to Transportation Engineer 2 (Construction Engineering) with a salary range of $91,244 – $117,842 annually.

Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor's degree
- Licensure or equivalencies:
Professional Engineer (PE), Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT), Land Surveyor (LS), Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT);
Level III certifications from NICET or NPS; AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) at WI level or above; 20‑302 may be substituted for general experience requirement.
- Experience in relevant engineering or construction management area
- Experience with engineering‑related computer software and/or construction management software
- Experience working collaboratively in a team to meet goals and objectives
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) using Microsoft Office Suite and Share Point
- Experience interpreting construction plans and specifications
- Ability to track and prioritize activities or projects while adhering to deadlines and producing deliverables
- Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam
- Must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license
- Must travel
Incumbents may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from highway or construction site environments and may experience moderate discomfort from year‑round weather conditions.
