Introduction

Bureau of Engineering and Construction, District 3 Surveys Section, is looking to hire a Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) with a target class of Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) in New Haven.
Current students who will be graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management by the end of May 2026 are strongly encouraged to apply!

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
* Location:
New Haven.
* Full Time, 40 hours per week.
* Monday through Friday.
* First Shift, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM
* A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required and must be maintained.
* P-4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit.
* Applicants must be available to travel.
THE ROLE
The District 3 Surveys section performs various types of land surveying, including topographic mapping, boundary and construction surveys. The Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) will be able to perform and learn to:
* Operate survey field instruments, such as conventional and robotic Total Stations, Auto and Digital Levels, GPS receivers, and LiDAR scanners.
* Use surveying software to perform complex computations.
* Use Microstation/Bentley Open Roads CADD (computer aided design and drafting) to prepare, revise and edit land surveys for mapping.
* Develop topographic mapping and DTM's (Digital Terrain Models) for future Highway and Railroad construction projects and support ongoing construction projects.
* Perform related duties as required inside the office and outdoors in the field year-round
The ideal Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) will:
* Possess general knowledge of land surveying and transportation.
* Have experience with construction engineering theories, principles, and methods.
* Be skilled in computer aided design software (Micro Station
· preferred) and other computer. applications including Word and Excel, Teams, and Bluebeam
* Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
* Possess organizational and interpersonal skills.
* Possess the ability to read and analyze construction plans and estimates.
* Be comfortable working in both office and field environments year-round.

Transportation Engineer Trainee
$72,629/annually
After successful completion of a one (1) year training program, you will be promoted to Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering)
$81,047-$99,673/annually
After successful completion of two (2) years as a Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering), you will be promoted to Transportation Engineer 2 (Construction Engineering)
$91,244-$117,842/annually
