Position: Transportation Engineer Trainee (Construction Engineering)

  • Telework eligibility after successful completion of the working test period in accordance with the Telework Policy

Role Overview
  • Problem‐solve, recommend, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner
  • Contribute to providing safe and efficient transportation improvements for the traveling public
  • Utilize computer‐aided design software (Micro Station) and related applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Read and analyze or prepare construction plans and estimates
Compensation & Promotion

Salary effective 06/26/2026:
Maximum of the target level for Transportation Engineer
2. After successful completion of a one‐year training program, promotion to Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) with a salary range of $85,151–$104,720 annually. After two years as a Transportation Engineer 1, promotion to Transportation Engineer 2 (Construction Engineering) with a salary range of $95,865–$123,809 annually.

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related engineering discipline.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure
  • Engineer‐in‐Training (EIT) licensure
  • Land Surveyor (LS) licensure
  • Land Surveyor‐in‐Training (LSIT) licensure
  • Level III certification in a National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) program (e.g., Transportation Construction Inspection, Construction Materials Testing, Highway Materials, Highway Surveys, Highway Construction Inspection)
  • Level III Survey Technician Certification from the National Society of Professional Surveyors
  • American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) at the level of Welding Inspector or above
Preferred Qualifications
  • Civil Engineering or Construction Management degree
  • Engineering degree in a position‐relevant area (e.g., Electrical Engineering)
  • Experience in position‐relevant engineering or construction management area
  • Experience utilizing engineering‐related computer software and/or construction management software
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team to meet goals and objectives
  • Experience communicating technical information to peers, supervisors, and managers in person, verbally, and in writing using Microsoft Office Suite and Share Point
  • Experience interpreting construction plans and specifications
  • Experience simultaneously tracking and prioritizing activities or projects while adhering to deadlines and producing deliverables
  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam
Special Requirements
  • Must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license
  • Must be willing to travel
Working Conditions

Exposure to some risk of injury or physical harm from highway or construction site environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from year‐round weather conditions.
